Ryan Reynolds will play the title role in the new Green Lantern movie, laying to rest casting rumors that have abound in the internet. The Deadpool star has landed one of the most recent comic book superhero to be adapted into a movie. The hunky actor portrays Hal Jordan, a one-time test pilot who is given the all-powerful Ring and its charger – a lantern – by crashed and dying alien Abin Sur in this much anticipated movie adaptation of the DC Comics superhero.
Warner Bros., the outfit producing and releasing the film, has chosen Reynolds over other actors who were being considered for the role. It was reported that Jared Leto and Bradley Cooper were both strongly considered to portray the Green Lantern. Others rumored to have screen tested and highly considered along with Reynolds were pop superstar Justin Timberlake and Serenity’s Nathan Fillion.
Reynolds-no stranger to comic book adaptations-has potrayed two comic book characters–vampire hunter Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity and, more recently, Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. His performance in the latter has garnered him a starring spot in the spin-off Deadpool being developed by FOX. There is no word yet on how this bit of news will affect the X-Men Origins spin-off.
‘Lantern’ is a full-blown space epic that is expected to cost between $150 million and $200 million, maybe even more. Filming is said to begin in January of 2010 and is scheduled for a June 2011 release. It has been rumored that DC has big plans for the Green Lantern, planning to turn it in a major franchise just like Superman and Batman.
