Philippines’ National Artists Proclaimed

President Gloria Arroyo signed a proclamation of the country’s new National Artists for 2009. The new national artists are:

Manuel Urbano, a.k.a. Manuel Conde – Film and Broadcast Category (posthumous) ;
Lazaro Francisco – Literature (posthumous) ;
Federico Aguilar-Alcuaz – Visual Arts, Painting, Sculpture and Mixed Media
Cecilia Guidote-Alvarez – Theater
Francisco “Bobby” Mañosa – Architecture
Carlo J. Caparas – Visual Arts and Film
Pitoy Moreno – Fashion Design

The National Commission for the Culture and the Arts searched for individuals who have great contribution in the Philippine Arts (Music, Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, Literature, Film, Broadcast Arts, Fashion Design and Architecture, and Allied Arts). In addition to the search being done by NCCA, there are also recommendations of Filipinos for the president to proclaim as national artists.
