Madonna Denied To Adopt Malawian Child
In similar adoption news, Pop Diva Madonna was denied to adopt a Malawian child by local authorities last week. Her bid to adopt a second child from the African nation was denied by a judge based on the judge’s fear that it could encourage child trafficking.
Judge Esimie Chombo stated in the ruling that “Anyone could come to Malawi and quickly arrange for an adoption that might have grave consequences on the very children that the law seeks to protect.o
The ruling, which was a shock came 3 years after Madonna successfully adopted a Malawian boy, David Banda. The 50 year-old singer planned to adopt a 3 year-old girl and take her back to New York City to raise as her own.
Mercy James, the child Madonna wanted to adopt, is an orphan at a local orphanage whose mother was said to have died at age 14. The child’s uncle was said to have given consent to the adoption.
Officials say that her bid to adopt the girl had not complied with the rules for adoption. The rules state that a prospective parent must be a resident of the country for at least 18 months before the filing for adoption. This requirement was waived when Madonna adopted David, which led to speculation that she used her money and influence in her favor. The singer has since been reported to have brought in thousands of dollars to Malawian orphanages, and was said to have even established one of her own.
But skeptics say it wasn’t the real reason why she was denied. Some believe it was Madonna’s current status, and moral values, that really caused her trouble. The singer recently divorced from husband, film director Guy Ritchie; and was linked a few months ago to married baseball superstar Alex Rodriguez. It was rumored that Madonna and Rodriguez had an affair which led to both celebrities’ respective divorces. Most recently, she has been linked to 20 year-old model Jesus Luz.
