Jollibee in Glee Episode

The latest episode of popular American TV show Glee was memorable for several reasons. Number one was Neil Patrick Harris was featured in it, number two, Joss Whedon who created Buffy the Vampire Slayer directed it. However, the best scene for me was a daydream from Artie who rose from his wheelchair and began dancing to “Safety Dance”.

What was totally awesome about this scene though was that in the background was a Jollibee store location! The scene lasted about two minutes and the Jollibee sign was prominent the entire scene.

Jollibee PR Manager Arline Adeva maintains that the visual was a simple coincidence but they were very proud and honored to receive publicity from this scene from Glee. The Jollibee mascot did not appear though, just its logo.

Being a huge fan of many American TV series, I’ve have noticed that the big shows go out of their way not to show and sort of logo or trademark at any point. If it is unavoidable, then they simply blur it out. This is done primarily so they don’t violate any Intellectual Property Rights by showing a company logo without consent and/or compensation. If you get caught doing so without permission, you usually end up having to pay for it in the end.

This is the case in the US but certainly not in the Philippines. Companies here typically don’t care if you use their logo in a TV show because it amounts to free publicity.

The fact that the Jollibee logo appeared in Glee tells me one of two things, either they are unaware of the brand or they just don’t really care. If this was the case should we be outraged by this lack of consideration from the Glee producers?

I for one am not outraged, but appreciate the publicity for our much loved Jollibee and feel even more proud for my country.
