Issues on Carlo J. Caparas’ Being a National Artist

Just recently, President Arroyo signed the proclamation for 2009 National Artists and one of the proclaimed artists, Carlo J.Caparas, became controversial.

Carlo J. Caparas was more known for massacre-themed films ala Calvento Files (but in the big screen) than being a comic artist. It was during the 90’s when this kind of trend in film making showed up in mainstream cinema. A lot of people, especially the artists, felt that these massacre films ‘bastardized’ the kind of Filipino cinema should be.

Many people think that there are more deserving artists such as Mike de Leon and Lino Brocka. There are speculations that politics is behind this but nothing has been confirmed yet.
