Carradine was in Bangkok to shoot a movie and had been staying at the hotel.
A spokesman for the US Embassy confirmed the death of the actor, saying they were informed by Thai authorities that Carradine died either late Wednesday or early Thursday, but he could not provide further details out of consideration for his family.
Thai newspaper The Nation’s website cited unidentified police sources as saying Carradine was found Thursday hanged in his luxury hotel room.
A maid reportedly found him hanging in his hotel room at 10 A.M. Thursday, naked. A preliminary police investigation found that he had hanged himself with a cord used with the room’s curtains. Police speculate he had been dead at least 12 hours. There was no sign that he had been assaulted, according to the authorities.
The Bangkok post reported that he was found curled up in the wardrobe with a shoe lace tied around his genitals, leading a police officer to say “”Under these circumstances we cannot be sure that he committed suicide but he may have died from masturbation.”
A local Thai tabloid released a photo of a naked man hanging, claiming it was Carradine. His family has expressed their outrage on the photo’s publication.
