Carlo J. Caparas Comments on His Critics

Carlo J. Caparas has expressed his sentiments on his critics last August 7 in his press conference. A lot of people were protesting the president’s proclamation of him being the National Artist for Visual Arts and Film. Some artists reacted negatively and even had rallies about it.
The director said that most people who were against him being a National Artist were part of the “elite” class and only part of a small portion of the whole population. He emphasized that these elistists look down on his work just because his works are part of popular culture, considered ‘low art’ in the Western Marxist sense.
According to him, he will not return the award as it was given to him because this is the most prestigious award that can be received by a Filipino artist.
