The inspiration for this show was from the British Reality Program ‘Pop Idol’, which aired on British television in 2001. The aim behind the show is to bring out talented signers from across the nation. Candidates are put through a rigorous selection process till the grand finale, when the winner emerges out.

Current directors of the show are Bruce Gowers, Nigel Lythgoe, and Ken Warwick. The show is judged by group of high profile judges. Current judges are Simon Cowell ( music manager), Paula Abdul (chorographer and pop singer) , Randy Jackson ( record producer, music manager) and Kara DioGuardi ( song writer, record producer). Current show host is Ryan Seacrest. This is a show that’s popular not just in the United States, but across the globe It is aired in Australia (Wednesday and Thursday Nights), Canada (Tuesday and Wednesday and the U.K (Thursday and Friday).

This show really reaches across to thousands of wannabe singers across America. The first round is where selected candidates have to go through an audition before the show’s producer (usually one or two will be present, in this round). Based on performance, the candidates can move to the next round or they have to leave. In this round, close to 200 candidates are selected, in each city where the audition happens.

Obama InaugurationIf you wish to enter the first round of American idol contest, you must be a U.S. citizen. Eligible age is between 16 and 28. Those who are under 18 must be accompanied by their parents. Proof of age must be shown such as driver’s license, green card, birth certificate or passport. You must not be under and record deals or signed up under any talent management contracts.

Those who audition must sign a release form, in which they transfer the rights to be seen and heard by the show’s cameras. This is the tough part for candidates as some bring with them falsified qualifications and of course such candidates are rejected. After the audition process is complete, you are under contract with the show for a three-month period.

After the first audition, the selected candidates are taken to Hollywood for the next round. In the current season, this selection round has been simplified. Instead of three rounds there is going to be only one round, in which, if the selected candidate impresses through their signing talents, they are chosen. If not, they have one more chance to impress the judge.

The next round is the major elimination round and it is held in CBS Television City. In the current season the selected candidates will be divided in groups of three each. Only the best candidates from this round will go to the finals, wherein they have to give a live performance in prime time on a weekly theme. The final round is held in Nokia Theatre and the winner get a one million (US) deal with a major company.

What makes the final round so interesting is that the audience has a chance to vote and decide whom they want. The other contestant is signed up by the show’s management company.
