Autism Speaks honors Yoko Ono Lennon as first Global Autism Ambassador and launches Light It Up Blue for World Autism Awareness Day?

Autism Speaks, the world’s largest autism science and advocacy organization, marked the third annual celebration of World Autism Awareness Day – a global effort to heighten awareness about a disorder affecting millions of individuals and families around the world – with a series of high profile awareness events and initiatives. WAAD was established by a resolution passed unanimously by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007, making autism one of only three health issues to be recognized by the UN with its own “day.”

On the evening of March 31, Autism Speaks held a reception to celebrate World Autism Awareness Day and honor world renowned artist Yoko Ono Lennon as Autism Speaks’ first Global Autism Ambassador in recognition of her work in making autism part of global consciousness. Last year on WAAD, Yoko Ono Lennon unveiled an original piece of artwork that she created for the day and auctioned it off as a fundraiser. In addition, Autism Speaks will screen a public service announcement call to action from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on WAAD.

On the eve of World Autism Awareness Day, notable buildings and landmarks around the world will be lit blue as part of Autism Speaks’ first Light It Up Blue campaign. Participating buildings include: the Bell Tower in Perth, Australia; the Kingdom Tower in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; the Bahrain World Trade Center Building, Bahrain; Toronto’s iconic CN tower; the Empire State Building, the New York Stock Exchange and Radio City Music Hall in New York; and the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) in Chicago. Tiger Wood’s kingdergarten teacher demands apology

Tiger Woods’ kindergarten teacher demanded an apology on Friday from the embattled golfer for “false accusations of physical and racial abuse.” Woods contended in a 2005 book that he was harassed and racially taunted on his first day of school, “and the teacher really didn’t do much of anything.” “The accusations against me were brought up again when Tiger’s infidelities came to light,” Maureen Decker told reporters here.

Decker said she was “shocked, saddened and disappointed” by what she called Woods’ “false accusations of physical and racial abuse on his first day of school in my kindergarten class.” “My friends and relatives started reminding me of how he slandered me and the school.

I am still feeling the stress of the allegations. I have tried numerous times to get through to Tiger or his representatives to ask for an explanation and an apology, but no one ever returned my calls,” Decker said at a news conference with her attorney, Gloria Allred. Decker, 69, said she wants a private and public apology from Woods.

Decker was Woods’ kindergarten teacher at Cerritos Elementary School in Anaheim of Los Angeles in 1981-82. In the Charles Barkley book “Who’s Afraid of a Large Black Man?,” Woods is quoted as saying: “I became aware of my racial identity on my first day of school, on my first day of kindergarten.

A group of sixth graders tied me to a tree, spray-painted the word (racial epithet) on me, and threw rocks at me. That was my first day of school. And the teacher really didn’t do much of anything. “I used to live across the street from the school and kind of down the way a little bit. The teacher said, `Okay, just go home.’ Continue Reading
